These are the signs and symptoms of a cough that help diagnose which of the causes is causing you cough.
Another important factor that determines the cause of the cough is whether it is chronic or acute.
Acute Cough:
Acute coughs have been divided into the following two:
• Infectious
• Noninfectious
Infectious Acute Cough:
The signs and symptoms of infectious acute cough are:
• sinus pressure
• runny nose
• sore throat
• fever
• nausea
• night sweats
• chills
• phlegm
• vomiting
• body aches
• postnasal drip
From all of the above phlegm sometimes indicates an infection. However, it is also seen in noninfectious causes.

• coughs that routinely worsen when you go to certain locations or do certain activities
• coughs that improve with inhalers or allergy medications.
Chronic Cough:

• Your cough will worsen when you are exposed to the environmental irritants if your cough is related to environmental allergens. Allergy medications can be very effective in the case you have an environmental allergy. If you have a smoker’s cough, it may improve if you quit smoking. Cough due to smoking can get worsen if you don’t quit smoking.
• A cough that worsens with certain locations or activities or a persistent cough is a symptom of a chronic lung disease such as asthma, emphysema, or chronic bronchitis.
• You will have the associated signs and symptoms if your cough is the reason of chronic postnasal drip, chronic sinus infections, and chronic runny nose.
